Creeds and Rules
Shinkyu Kenpo Creed

I pledge myself to the study of Shinkyu Kenpo and will always conduct myself in a manner which reflects credit upon myself, my school, and my community.

I shall exercise great restraint in the use of my martial arts knowledge, employing it only if forced.

If forced, I will defend myself, my loved ones, and those weaker than I, even if that means taking a life to save others.

I will only take a life if I have to, with great regret in being forced to do so.

Martial Arts Student Creed

I intend to develop myself in a positive manner and to avoid anything that would reduce my mental growth or physical health.

I intend to develop self discipline in order to bring out the best in myself and others.

I intend to use what I learn in class constructively and defensively to help myself and my fellow man and never to be abusive or offensive.

American Kenpo Karate

"I come to you with only karate, empty hands. I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor, should it be a matter of life or death, right or wrong; then here are my weapons, Karate, my empty hands."

Martial Arts Creed for Children
We are the young warriors.
Our lives are a gift.
Our minds and bodies are tools we will strengthen to contribute to society.
With courage and honor, we will love and appreciate our families.
We will respect our elders and teachers, and protect nature.
We will not fight, nor misuse what we learn.
We will be a good friend and live a good life.
We, the children of today, are the leaders of tomorrow.

Instructor Pledge

I pledge myself and hope to be worthy of the honor of Instructor, by setting a proper example for my fellow students to follow.

Recognizing the value of working together, I will volunteer my time and skills to assist in helping others.

Further, I will strive each day to strengthen my character, nourish my spirit, and extend my capabilities.

Respecting the purpose and principles of Shinkyu Kenpo, I resolve to uphold my new responsibilities with humbleness and pride.

Senfu Pledge

I pledge myself to the challenges that I must meet and master to become Senfu, seeking to create within me an atmosphere of excellence that both instructs and inspires.

Knowing that success in teaching is not accomplished alone, I will also look to others for their help and listen to my students for inspiration.

By my determination I will lead by example and demonstrate my faith in the power of positive actions.

I will cultivate humbleness and openness, the qualities that make learning possible, for only as I continue to learn will I be able to teach.

With unity as my goal in both Shinkyu Kenpo and my dojo, I will strive to attain the oneness of my students and myself in body, mind, and spirit.

Four Rules of Kenpo
  1. Establish your base
First rule of Kenpo... If you don't have a solid base, you'll be off balance and nothing will work

  2. Create distance
Second rule of Kenpo...Get away from the attacker

  3. Control, Disarm, Technique
Your first priority in an attack is to control whatever weapon an attacker might have. Second disarm the attacker and third, run your technique to dispose of the threat

  4. Strike High/ Check low & Strike low/ Check High
Anytime you strike an attacker high, you must check for a low counter by the attacker. Same goes for when you strike low; make sure you check high. The check might be with a leg, arm, or hand; it doesn't matter as long as your vital areas aren't exposed to the attacker

Three Rules of Self Defense
  1. Know your surroundings.

  2. Do not anticipate anything.

  3. React quickly with intent!

Three Rules of a Counter Attack
You have to be focused, fast, and accurate!
  1. Be focused, on the attack.

  2. Move fast, intercepting the attack.

  3. Your counter strike must be accurate!

The Three Assumptions
  1. Always assume that your attacker knows at least as much about fighting as you do.

  2. Always assume that your attacker has a weapon, or has access to one.

  3. Always assume that your attacker is not alone.

Ten Commandments of Prevention
  1. ACCEPT the fact that there are impending dangers

  2. CONSIDER the fact that danger can & will happen to you

  3. UNDERSTAND how danger strikes

  4. CREATE the desire to want to do something about

  5. Have the CONVICTION to commence studying to prevent it

  6. DEVELOP the will power to complete the studying

  7. KEEP UP & CONTINUE the studying

  8. Periodically RE-EXAMINE present, as well as new dangers to come

  9. Make CAUTION the key to your endeavors

  10. AVOID unnecessary and/or suspicious activities where danger can lurk
