Frequently Asked Questions
Below you will find answers to our most often asked questions. However, if you have additional questions please call us at any time and we will be happy to help you. Just go to our SKA Schools page to find the school most convenient for you to contact.

How fast can I learn?
That's up to you. If you listen and practice, you'll learn quickly. Each class will teach you something useful, and will let you practice and hone your skills and build endurance. It takes time and hard work to become a black belt and we will be there for you all the way.

What age groups do you teach?
We teach Junior Classes (6 to 9), Teens Classes (10 to 15), and Adults Classes. Juniors are taught a different curriculum from the teens and adult to work more on physical fitness, balance, basic martial arts, and bully & stranger self-defense.

What if I start and it's not for me?
We offer a guarantee. Try us for a month. If our system is not for you, simply turn in your uniform and we'll promptly and courteously return your trial month's fee.

What is Shinkyu Kenpo and how is it different from other martial arts?
The martial arts were developed thousands of years ago as forms of self-defense. But today most martial arts systems are more sport than self-defense and confined to rules of engagement. Shinkyu Kenpo, of course, is a kenpo based system which is one of the oldest self-defense arts. There are NO RULES when defending yourself. So we don't confine our students to rules of engagement. The only rules we insist on are HONESTY, COURTESY, RESPECT, DISCIPLINE

Does it increase aggressiveness?
Absolutely not. Your child will be taught from the first lesson that a true "Shinkyu Kenpo" never misuses their martial arts skills. Throughout their training, they will be reminded that being physically and mentally tough does not allow one to be tough with others. Instead, Shinkyu Kenpo students are expected to be humble, courteous, respectful and careful about when and where they practice their skills. The instructors in Shinkyu Kenpo will continually educate your child that Shinkyu Kenpo is a form of exercise and self improvement, not a tool for bullying.

Can I take classes with my child?
Yes. In fact many families are finding Shinkyu Kenpo to be the perfect family activity, combining an exciting workout with a new learning experience. You have your choice of attending group specific classes such as Children's, Teens, and Adult classes individually. Or you can come together in ether one of our open classes for Teens & Adult, or family classes designed of all ages. Either way you'll have a great time and create a special family bond.

How safe is it to learn?
Shinkyu Kenpo is safe and fun for students of all ages and physical abilities. Classes are taught by expert instructors as students are shown techniques in a step by step manner at their own pace. A thorough stretching routine, matted flooring, and protective safety equipment are all part of our commitment to ensuring student safety.

What if I never did it before or if I'm currently out of shape?
In Shinkyu Kenpo we have ongoing enrollment, so beginners are always welcome. Our special trial program makes it easy for new students of all fitness levels to get started. First time students receive one-on-one instruction designed to answer common questions and provide an introduction to the basics of Shinkyu Kenpo. In addition, the belt system used in Shinkyu Kenpo allows all students to train at their own pace and improve their physical condition gradually.

We are experts at working with beginners. Our instructors know the difference martial arts have made to their lives and will share that gift with you.
