About Shinkyu Kenpo

The System, Our Martial Way

The Shinkyu Kenpo system is a logical non-traditional combat, and free-style Martial Arts system based in the American Kenpo Karate ideology, influenced by Shinkyudo and the Combat Self-Defense Fighting Arts.

"Martial Arts training is rooted in the feet, developed in the legs,
directed by the waist and expressed through the fist."
- Author unknown

(Click Here to learn about the three main influences in Shinkyu Kenpo.)

Shinkyu Kenpo is a home grown system born here in the United States and designed for the modern world. All students will learn the traditions, history, techniques and kata / forms steeped in the ancient arts that influenced these systems. From white belt to 1st black belt, our students will learn everything about the ancient art of kenpo, the Japanese style of shinkyudo, and the modern American Kenpo Karate system. Where it came from and what other systems influenced it. We believe you need to know where you came from before you will know where you are going.

Shinkyu Kenpo is not a board breaking, show training, or kickboxing system. We are a no non-sense, combat, self-defense system that teaches our students how to defend themselves in real life situations. There are no rules when it comes to self-defense, so we do not confine our students to the rules of sports. Hands-on technique training and sparring are required of all our students, so they can truly learn the techniques taught to them. We do teach restraint and respect for our training partners so that no one gets hurt. As each belt level is achieved, more advanced techniques will be learned, as well as pushing the level of training. This not only teaches our students how to hit and break an opponent but how to be hit and to condition our students to the realities of an attack.

The Shinkyu Kenpo system believes that every martial arts system has something to offer but no one system is a perfect for every individual. Our foundation maybe in American Kenpo Karate, but we cross train in other martial art systems so that every Shinkyu Kenpo student will find what they are looking for and become the Martial Artist they have always wanted to be. All our students follow their own path too their own destination, together. In Shikyu Kenpo, we are united in our diversity and strong in our unity as we teach each other what we have learned.

All students will learn and become proficient in over 272 individual empty hand techniques plus all other variations of techniques to become a black belt. They will also learn katas for each belt level based on the techniques they have learned. This will not only teach the students about themselves but also how to move from one technique to another fluidly, training ones body to use what it has learned without effort. Kata is a moving meditation and mock combat that teaches both the mind and the body to move effortlessly with intent but without thought.

Advanced students will learn over 100+ weapon techniques and become proficient in six different weapons (cane, long staff, pugil stick (short staff), escrima, karambit, and Chinese broadsword). Master Black belts will study Kendo, Iaito and other Katana sword styles.

Students will also train in different sparing styles. We learn "push hands" sparing to learn about our opponent from a single touch. We train in 'full contact' sparing to learn about ourselves and our opponents in real life fighting situations. We spar with pugil sticks, shinai, karambit and escrima to learn how to fight with and against weapons.

Our hope is to train leaders, not only with-in the Shinkyu Kenpo system, but in our local community as well.

So, if you are looking for the "Tradition" and "Art" aspects of a traditional martial art system but also want the hard core, no-non-sense, no rules self-defense fighting skills taught in the combat self-defense fighting arts and a system that is looking out for your health by teaching you healthier alternatives and nurturing your sprit, then you have found your system. We are a family, and we are here to help each other in and out of the dojo.

Our Standards

Our standards are very high both in technical know how and in personal fitness. No McDojo here, If a student can not pass either the physical test, techniques test, or the kata test, they do not advance in belt rank. No If's, And's, or Buts. We challenge any black belt from other systems to see if they can pass just our black belt level physical test.

What is a McDojo?
McDojo is a pejorative term used by some martial artists to describe a martial arts school where image or profit is of a higher importance than technical standards. The term is an example of McWords applied to martial arts dojo. While using the term McDojo primarily indicates judgment of a school's financial or marketing practices, it also implies that the teaching standards of such school are much lower than that of other martial arts schools, or that the school presents non-martial arts training as martial arts. Sometimes, a McDojo's practices may border on fraud, which is sometimes called the practice of bullshido.

There are other factors that some martial artists believe to be McDojo practices, such as, contracts, black belt clubs, belts and testing fees, junior belts ranks, and non martial art classes. It is true that most McDojo's use these factors to generate revenue, but this is not what we believe. Much like McDonald's and other fast food restaurants, it is not how they get you into the door but how fast they get you out of the door. It is all about testing fees and other charges. A McDojo rushes people though the belt ranks, giving belts to students who can't remember their techniques or kata, and have little or no physical testing. Standards are so low that most McDojo black belts can't even hold a basic defensive posture.

All our students earn their belts though hard work and practice. If it takes a student a year to earn their belt, then it will take a year. But we haven't had that happen yet.

If you want to get a Black Belt fast, buy one! If you are looking to get a black belt certificate fast with little effort, then we are not for you. If you want to learn martial arts and truly change your life though hard work and a butt load of practice, then you have found your system.

Shinkyu Kenpo is more than just a Martial Arts system. We are:
  • Your Guide, teaching you the martial way.
  • Your Self-Defense Instructor, teaching you how to defend yourself in the real world.
  • Your Nutritionist, guiding you to a healthier life style though proper diet and weight control.
  • Your Personal Trainer, setting you up on a personal fitness programs to fit your needs.
  • Above all, your friend. Not just your instructors, but all the students too.
We are a brotherhood and family and here to help each other at anytime.
A system designed for the new millennia.

We believe they had it right in the old days, in that the Martial Arts was much more than just teaching the fighting arts. It was a way of life. The Body, Mind, and Spirit was their main focus and the fundamentals of life to them, and must be cultivated together.

  • Body - Though the normal course of training our students will work their bodies to become stronger and increase their endurance. We also help guide our students to a healthier life style through proper diet and personal training to give them the health and body they have always dreamed of.

  • Mind - We never stop learning our techniques & kata, both new and old, or the aspects of the Martial Arts and how it can be used in our everyday life, in essence, exercising the mind. It is said that "you will never get old if you keep the mind young", and it has be proven that exercising and challenging the mind by learning new things keeps the mind young.

  • Spirit - It is proven that meditation is a very good way to calm a restless and troubled soul, be it from work or personal problems. Now, we don't sit and meditate for hours on end. No, we have a better way, KATA. Kata is described as a moving meditation and mock combat. When you learn and perform a kata correctly, nothing make you feel better about yourself. All the troubles you may have don't exist, and you are one with yourself: Body, Mind, and Spirit.

The spiritual aspect also deals on a much higher level with religion. Some martial arts hold very strong views on religion and try to put the two together. Much like our belief in blending martial arts, we hold an Agnostic view and believe that all religions may hold some key to the answers we all are looking for. No one religion is placed ahead of others like in some other martial arts systems. All religions should be looked at and learned from. We hope that by keeping an open mind to the fundamentals of what all religions try to teach, we will help feed the sprit of our students.

If the body is not healthy through proper diet and exercise, the mind is not kept active and challenged from time to time, and the spirit is restless and confused, a person will have no confidence and be unhappy in life. His or her job, school work, and family life will suffer. This will cause most people to look for an escape. Drugs and alcohol addiction are the most common, and suicide is the most extreme. Like we said, Shinkyu Kenpo is more than just a Martial Arts system, we are a family.
